What would you like to know?

Hi, I’m Carina, I live in the west of Ireland, I turned 50 this year, and I’m so excited to welcome you to Breaking Fads, this has been my passion for some time now.

Together with my sister-in-law, Shona, I co-founded Breaking Fads to help women finally break free from the dieting cycle—and discover a way of eating that actually works for their body, mind, and lifestyle.

But let me back up for a moment, because like so many of the women we work with… I’ve been through it too.

What qualifies me to give advice?

I’m a qualified Nutritional Therapist, Naturopath, and Herbalist with over 15 years of clinical experience—but my journey started long before that. For years, I struggled with my weight. I was always on a diet. I tried everything—ate less, exercised more, followed the rules—but the results never lasted. I’d lose weight, gain it back, feel defeated, and start over again.

Eventually, I realised… I wasn’t failing the diets. The diets were failing me.

In my early 20’s I qualified as a nurse at the Royal Free Hospital in Hampstead, London, UK.  I worked in Acute medical in the UK, Australia and Ireland, mainly in A&E and Medical Assessment Units.  In 2002 I was assaulted by a patient and left with a serious neck injury.  After leaving my nursing career due to my injury, I started looking beyond conventional approaches. I dove deep into holistic nutrition and discovered the powerful role hormones play in our weight, cravings, energy, and overall health.

And it was a game changer.

When I began eating for my body type—supporting my hormones instead of fighting them—everything shifted. I stopped dieting. I felt stronger, more balanced, and finally in control of my body again.

2020 wasn't just the beginning of the Pandemic for me

Then, in 2020, I faced another major challenge: I was diagnosed with stage 4 breast cancer. My world completely shifted. I closed my clinic to focus on my own health. My cancer is widespread - breast, lungs, spine, liver, bones in general. I wasn't given much hope at the beginning so i decided to show all my own knowledge at it too, and 5 years on, I am doing well, my tumour markers are low and have been for over 4 1/2 years not, i have had shrinkage and no progression and i remain on very few medications. Through all of my cancer journey, this way of eating became a lifeline. It gave me energy when I needed it most, and a sense of control when so much felt uncertain. It reminded me that food is powerful. Nourishment is medicine. I continue to keep in mind what works for my Bodytype (the Lilly - G type) and it continues to support me in my health journey. That is why I have always loved using this program with my clients, because even if you come for weight management, you will see improvements in your health as a wonderful side effect.
